SMART Therapy Video Resources

SMART supports youth and families to transform adverse and traumatic experiences through movement, playfulness, connection and a deep held respect for the wisdom of the body in healing. These video resources will introduce you to some of the Regulation Tool and therapeutic concepts utilized in SMART to support children, teens and parents to feel safe, connected, and effective in handling strong emotions or new experiences in life.

Introduction to SMART with Alexandra Cook, PhD

In this first session Dr. Alexandra Cook is introducing SMART, Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment, an innovative mental health therapy for children and adolescents who have experienced complex trauma to help them with emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal regulation.

Using your muscles to regulate with Heather Finn, LICSW

In this 2nd session, Heather Finn, LICSW, explains the SMART approach, particularly the role of the proprioceptive system in somatic regulation. This session focuses on experiential learning, encouraging participants to explore proprioceptive inputs and how these can help regulate arousal and support trauma recovery.

Power of touch: Tactile input with Anne Westcott, LICSW

In this 3rd session, Ann Wescott, LICSW, focuses on the role of tactile and touch inputs in somatic regulation, attachment, and trauma treatment. The session also includes a demonstration of how to use tactile tools for somatic regulation and discusses the significance of integrating these methods into trauma therapy.

Rock n roll with Elizabeth Warner, Ed.M, Psy.D

In this 4th session, Dr. Elizabeth Warner is explaining the vestibular input and its role in somatic regulation. The session underscores the role of movement and sensory input in trauma treatment, advocating for incorporating these elements in therapy to aid regulation and healing.

Finding the beat: Rhythm with Anne Westcott, LICSW

In this 5th session, Anne Westcott, LICSW, goes over the role of rhythms in SMART therapy, building upon the foundational understanding of the SMART model and highlights how rhythms impact these foundational levels, influencing a child's ability to regulate, process trauma, and build attachments.

Attachment building with Alexandra Cook, PhD

In this 6th lesson, Dr. Cook, explains  attachment building through co-regulation within the SMART therapy framework. This session builds on the previous five sessions and underscores how co-regulation is a key component of attachment building in SMART therapy.
